Brian has been a trainer and coach for almost a decade and has held certifications through ACE, NASM, ONNIT, Henselmans, and YogaFit. He has worked alongside the likes of Tim Skwiat, Tony Gentilcore, Ben Pakulski and his Mi40 Team, Martin Rooney, Adam Feit, and many more. Brian is a Precision Nutrition Level 2 (Pn2) nutrition coach and currently finishing a Bachelors of Science in Lifestyle Coaching from Arizona State University.

I had previously worked with a trainer for about a year focusing on weight training then switched it up and focused on HIIT cardio 3-4 times a week. I noticed I was losing muscle, having muscle weakness/fatigue, and also missed lifting heavy. I found Rachel through sweatingr's (Marjorie) Instagram and not gonna lie, stalked Rachel's Instagram and knew I wanted to train with her. Her strength, dedication, and knowledge about training/weight lifting were apparent from her social media but meeting her in person just solidified my assumptions. Plus she’s such a sweet person! Rachel has been training me for a couple of weeks now and I can already tell that my strength is coming back as well as my confidence with lifting heavier. Not to mention the facilities at Motive Training are top notch -- they have many pieces of equipment that many other gyms do not and the space is always fresh, clean, and happy! I am looking forward to continuing to train with Rachel for the next year (and more!) and would highly suggest checking out Motive Training and the other trainers they have on staff!
Motive Training is a place where you wanna get results and improve yourself last week was my first official day working out at the new gym and absolutely love the new place to workout at. If you are in the downtown area of Grand Rapids area I definitely highly recommend you check it out if you’re looking for trainers it’s a fun and great place to workout especially if you like to have great supports from your trainers. Brian is a great friend of my who I workout throughout the week with, every week and can honestly say he’s definitely helped me out with working out especially on my form in each of the workout session we do together. I started working with Brian Murray at Motive Training a little over a year ago after I moved to West Michigan from the East Coast. I was insecure in my body, had terrible self-esteem, and needed more than anything for someone to understand my struggles and work with me to drop weight, build muscle and not only feel and look better physically, but also lift my spirits and show me that positive change was possible. When I leave a session with Brian, I feel good, I feel stronger, I feel accomplished and leaner, that feeling carries over into the rest of my day and week. After suffering a traumatic injury, Brian was patient, kind, and stepped up to the plate by working with my physical therapists and doctors to get me back on track and back to the gym as quickly as possible. Brian’s method of training is as good, if not better than any of the gyms I have trained at in NYC, DC and Baltimore and his unique style and approach will certainly elevate him in the fitness industry and bill him as one of West Michigan’s most talented and successful trainers. We are fortunate to have his services in Grand Rapids and even if you’re not in Grand Rapids, he or any of his team members are definitely worth the drive.

I came to Motive Training because I have been training for some long distance running races. I knew to be able to perform well & run these distances I would need to become physically stronger. I have been training with Brian now for 8 weeks. And in that short time I cannot believe the strength I've gained. I've leaned out/lost body fat. And my speed is getting faster and I'm able to go the distance because I am STRONGER! From the moment I stepped foot into their training studio/gym I felt welcome & comfortable. I like the intimacy of their studio. Never more than 4-6 people in there when I've been training & that's including the trainers. It is not intimidating at all! And it is very very clean. Brain has listened to me throughout my running training, the needs I have, any running injury/pain and has implemented it into our training sessions. He takes the time to explain the movements to me and makes sure I am doing them correctly so I benefit the most from it! Even when I'm unsure he is always patient. He has been a motivator and great teacher! He is very supportive of my running goals and takes an actual interest in hearing about them! Both Brian and Rachel are just normal people who have the knowledge to train anyone to become better, stronger, faster, more confident! And my confidence has grown 10 fold. And that is huge. I cannot recommend Motive Training highly enough!

I'm so nervous! My first official review of a place! Awesome space! Love the color scheme! Also! The staff at Motive Training really does the best job of showing me how to both hurt myself and gain strength on the daily. I am a better person for it. Positive. Patient. Honest. And a little nuts - just a few qualities I found going here....
I have been so impressed with Motive Training and the trainer I work with, Rachel. It was important to me to find a female trainer in a small environment. The gym is set up intentionally, so that you aren't overwhelmed by a huge space with intimidating equipment. There are usually only a few other people in the facility at a time and everyone has been welcoming and inclusive.
Brian is a master of the long term solution. It’s not about today or this week, but more where do I want to go and this is how we get there. His workouts are the same way. In the moment it doesn’t seem that bad, but the next day you can feel every muscle he worked! Very satisfied. Seeing great results.
Rachel and Brian at Motive are absolutely awesome. I started as someone who had no idea how to reach my goals and Rachel has patiently and kindly taught me how to love working out in a gym setting. Motive’s location is super clean and doesn’t feel like a gym - it’s a studio - and everyone is super friendly, welcoming, and accepting. Such a great experience each time I go. As far as trainers go, they are attentive, and I have never felt alone on my health journey since meeting them nearly 16 months ago.
What a great place! The trainers are world class. They treat you with respect! They will help push you through mobility limitations that you were not aware of and help with things that you are not comfortable with by yourself. They train you to move with a purpose. The owner Brian is great to work with and really wants you to succeed with your goals. Rachel is the strongest woman I know, friendly, happy and full of so much energy! Very inspiring! Josiah was my personal trainer! I so looked forward to our morning workouts together! He taught me so much when it comes to form, and building one exercise on another ! I told him not to let me get away with any slacking, and he held up his end of it! Lol We had so many things in common, the great conversations made the hour workout go quickly! My favorite day of the week is when I get to train at Motive. Everyone there is super friendly, encouraging and the energy is so positive. The space is shiny and new with all the bells and whistles for equipment. It's obvious the management and trainers truly care about their clients and want to create a healthy, educational experience for everyone who walks in the door. My trainer Rachel has been such a joy to work with - her knowledge and encouragement have completely changed my outlook on fitness and I appreciate her so much. I cannot recommend Motive enough!
I absolutely love the days I get to train at Motive! I was always intimidated by gyms (and by weight lifting in general) but Motive and especially my trainer, Rachel, have completely turned that around. This new space is so bright and clean and everyone is incredibly welcoming, encouraging, and positive! I love the small studio feel while still having access to all the equipment I could need to get a great workout in. Rachel is seriously THE BEST to work with! Her patience, constant encouragement and guidance have given me the confidence to push myself and accomplish things I never thought I could. She truly cares about her clients and wants to see them succeed!
Easily the best trainers I have worked with. I thought I was very athletic and knowledgeable of working out and how to get in shape before this, but after working with the trainers here, they not only fixed my form but also challenged me as well as gave me more advice in how to change myself into the best athlete I could be. I met one of the trainers over a year ago, and he absolutely transformed how I went about working out. He slowed me down, fixed my form in different exercises to target different muscles I was aiming at, and the results I get now are better than I could have imagined. I definitely recommend them 100%, you’ll easily be working with some of the best and most welcoming trainers I have ever met.
The trainers here are very attentive, knowledgeable, and great at helping you work around any injuries you may have. After several months of working with Brian, I have gained a lot of strength and confidence, not just in the gym but outside as well. I love how simple the gym itself is, it really helps what you learn translate to things you can do on your own, instead of relying heavily on big, intimidating equipment.
I've been working 1 on 1 with Rachel at Motive Training for a few months and couldn't be happier! The knowledge and skill Rachel is teaching me has brought my fitness and strength to a new (awesome) level. I've dealt with a few significant injuries over the years and she has always kept this in mind while pushing me further than I ever did on my own, in a safe and pain-free manner. I trust her and she knows her stuff! The training has been 110%, but the customer service at Motive also needs mention. Rachel, Brian, and everyone else are welcoming, knowledgeable, and experienced. They're great teachers, offer encouragement and support, and are just plain nice people. The gym is brand new, clean, and well-planned. These guys obviously love what they do and it shows in the product they offer!

I worked with Brian for over 2 years. He's incredibly dedicated to his craft and really cares about his clients. Every time I asked him a question he replied in depth and usually providing the rational behind the way he designed my training. I really liked this! On a personal level, he's caring, polite and sensitive to my needs. This was important for me as I have a disability in my feet that was quite limiting to certain movements. Brian intelligently modified my training to work around it. I've never felt better! I can't recommend him enough. He really does care!
